‘Can I Swim Even in Cold Weather?’

Date

Pool Maintenance in Coral SpringsWinter is coming. And while it typically doesn’t get super cold in South Florida, there likely will be days when the outdoor temperature drops below your comfort level. So can you still swim in your outdoor pool even when the air temperature is in the 60s, 50s, or even 40s?

The answer is yes, as long as you are careful and take precautions.

Benefits of Cold Water Swimming

Swimming in cool water is not only possible, but it also can be invigorating. In fact, in some northern environments, people jump into water that is barely above freezing just for the thrill of doing it.

While “polar plunges” aren’t likely to catch on in South Florida, you can still experience the exhilaration of using your backyard pool when the weather turns cooler — as long as you are smart about it. Don’t jump into chilly water if you are elderly, pregnant, or have a history of health problems. It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before doing anything physically risky or out of the ordinary.

It’s also a good idea to swim with a buddy, or at least tell someone you trust that you are planning on cold-water swimming. The last thing you want is to find yourself alone if you respond negatively to the experience.

If you are entering a pool with water temperature below 60 degrees F, you might consider wearing a triathlon wetsuit with full coverage of your arms and legs, as well as an insulated swim cap. Earplugs also can help reduce the risk of irritation from the cool water.

Winter Swimming Cheats

Of course, an easier option is simply to turn on your pool’s heater. That way you can swim in comfortable water regardless of the outside air temperature. Or simply wait until later in the day, when the sun is likely to warm your pool water.

Swimming in winter can be invigorating, exciting, and exhilarating. But leave the polar bear stuff to the folks up north.
