Owning a backyard swimming pool is fun. It can make your home the center of the neighborhood social scene. And it always gives you a comfortable, safe place to relax either alone or with your family.
But caring for your pool is actually a lot of work. To properly maintain your backyard pool requires daily attention, a lot of equipment and supplies, and knowledge about both chemistry and mechanics. But it doesn’t have to …
Basic Pool Care
Pools come in all shapes and sizes. But the same basic care applies to most residential pools. For example, to properly circulate pool water, you should run your pool pump between eight and 12 hours per day, backwash or clean your filter if the pressure is above 10 to 15 psi, clean your skimmer and pump basket, and make sure your jets are facing circular and downward.
To properly clean your pool, you need to brush its walls, steps, ladders, and low circulation spots daily, skim the surface regularly, and vacuum your pool at least once per week, or use an automatic cleaner.
For proper pool chemistry, it’s essential to test your water balance once or twice per week, maintain the proper pH and alkalinity balance, maintain safe sanitizer levels, and shock your pool water bi-weekly. Whew!
